NICO HOLDINGS LIMITED DONATES BOOKS TO NATIONAL LIBRARY - 10th July 2009

NICO Holdings Limited continues to fulfil its promise to play a role in education in Malawi. During a donation ceremony held at the NLS Blantyre Branch on the 10th of July 2009, NICO Holdings Limited donated secondary school text books to National Library Service (NLS). Linda Banda, Corporate Affairs Manager for the NICO Group said the company and its subsidiaries is committed to improving education standards in Malawi.

“We recently sponsored Masters Degree Programmes in the USA for two lecturers at the polytechnic and our subsidiaries continue to support the University of Malawi in various ways. The decision to donate Secondary School Text books to National Library Service is in line with our commitment, said Banda.

She said NICO Holdings Limited believes that books are easily accessible to the students after school hours, hence the donation to the library. She added that the books will also benefit the general public.

On behalf of the NLS Board, Management and Staff, the Board Chairman Sheik Dinala Chabulika thanked NICO Holding Limited for the donation.

According to Chabulika, the NLS was established in 1967 with responsibility to equip and promote libraries so the people of Malawi could have access to educational and recreational information materials for national development.

The NLS has a chain of 12 branches scattered in the three regions of the country with its headquarters in Lilongwe.

“This donation comes at the time when there is severe shortage of Secondary School text books in our libraries”, said Chabulika.

He also pointed out that the NLS the only public library service offering free information service to both the urban and rural people in Malawi.

“There has been an increase in the number of private secondary schools in the country that have no capacity to set up their own libraries. As a result, many school and collage going students are relying on the NLS for their information requirements. The NLS is struggling to meet this demand”, added Chabulika.
